day one: kaua’i helicopters, valleys, & canyons

Safari Helicopter Ride

For our first day on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i, we decided to do a helicopter tour of the island. Being but a speck in the entire Pacific Ocean and considering there is a good chunk of the island that can only be seen by air or by sea, the helicopter ride was a must. I booked Safari Helicopters for many reasons. 1. I liked their website. 2. I liked the idea of being on a safari in the sky. 3. They seemed pretty reliable and had some good reviews/rates. As you can see from the picture above, we were two very happy fliers. Here’s a wee-bit of what Dayo and I saw from the skies.

In short, the tour was phenomenal. Seeing the Na Pali Coast to the right side of the helicopter stole my heart and my imagination. I had that India.Arie song “God is Real” in my head the entire time. Oh, how real he is and how blessed I felt cruising the skies with love to my left and nature’s beauty surrounding me.

The day was just beginning at this point. From Safari Helicopters we headed to the west side of the island to grab Jo Jo’s shaved ice and check out Waimea Canyon. The canyon is also known as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” I’ve not been to the Grand Canyon in Arizona just yet (terrible, terrible), so I can’t truly compare. Waimea is amazing though. It was a true testament to the island’s natural diversity. I believe you will see it below too. (Disregard my tourist pose in the first shot.)

All photos by Adrienne C. Wilson; except where pictured. This dream vacation became real when friends, family, strangers in chat rooms and people who believed in my Trazzler piece about a place called, Haiti, voted for it. Many Mahalo to all the voters and to Trazzler. Major Mahalo to the contest sponsor the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau.

Gorgeous imagery! I’ve only seen the Na Pali coast from the ground when I was in Hawaii but from above…..it looks amazing!
