I’m going to recap from the present going backwards folks so please pay attention. There are very important and boring details of my life that you will be quizzed on at some later date, but let’s just roll for now.
Mariella and I just arrived in Williamsburg, VA roughly around 9 PM this evening and from what I could gather this place looks pretty poppin’ and lockin’ with all types of tourist fun to be had. Of course I won’t be able to check this Colonial Triangle with attractions such as Historic Jamestowne or the Yorktown Battlefield – because why? My J-O-B. We’re scheduled to work at a Staples store tomorrow and then we’ll spend one last night at the flossy Holiday Inn before heading out. (Note: The Holiday Inn in Williamsburg, VA has been nominated by me and my traveling co-worker as one of the best we’ve stayed in to date. If you’re in the area I’d recommend it…) I’m hoping I’ll get to see something while I’m here, but I might have to bookmark this one for another occasion.
Earlier today we spent seven hours of our day working at a Staples in California, Maryland. Hollywood, Maryland is just outside (approx 10 miles) of California, Maryland for those geography hungry folk wanting to look it up on a road atlas. California, Maryland is also three hours outside of Williamsburg, VA in the event you want to retrace the steps or tire marks of our vehicle touring the country. I don’t really have a lot to say about California, Maryland other than we had to pass through a lot of farm land heading in and out. The store was pretty quiet and calm today. Too calm and quiet actually. We sold a handful of printers, but not as many as we would have liked. On the flipside we were invited to a bed and breakfast by the owner which we promised we’d stay a night if we ever found our way back in the area. Mariella keeps forking the Espanol down my throat so it looks like I will be speaking to you know who! (For those who have no idea about “you know who” just go on and insert some famous Latino in there – maybe Castro?)

This was only one of my lessons for the day. Mariella scribbled it on one of the HP balloons and then she scanned the balloon on one of the printers creating a very captivating piece of art work. I admit she is a firecracker, but I am learning. The good, the bad and the Peruana way! Photo: Adrienne C. Wilson

Just an upshot of my nose. This is the end result when the store is slow. Photo: Adrienne C. Wilson
The day prior to today we were planted in La Plata, Maryland. (Look up Clinton and Waldorf) Correction: I ran around the D.C. and surrounding areas like mad so I wasn’t planted in La Plata much really. First thing on the agenda was getting my hair did (or done) at a spot I spotted in Takoma Park, MD. Now, I had purchased a Black Hair mag a few days prior hoping to score the look one of the models had. I thought it was fairly simple: Cornrows going around the head (horizontal not vertical) to create a highly sexy and fashionable braided doo similar to the finger wave styles worn in the 1920′s. Can you dig it? Well, the woman whose hands were a complete stranger to my scalp started to worry me some when she walked around the salon with the picture in hand asking the other stylists how to achieve the look. I started pondering if this woman could even braid a lick. After she made her rounds she provided some type of disclaimer and suggested I pick another doo, but I refused and told her to give it a go. My mind was already made up though I was tempted to just get up and leave. Long story short she didn’t do it the exact way the picture looked which is what she warned me about, but it doesn’t look bad. Thankfully I have a face to pull something like this off, but I won’t be letting her fingers comb through my hair again. Her lack of confidence worried me tremendously.
From the hairdresser I drove into Crystal City, VA to have lunch with a pal I’d met almost two years ago and do a little window shopping. The window shopping went all downhill and I found mysterious and suspicious shopping bags in my hand! Who put those there?!?!?:) Lunch went well though.
After escaping Crystal City, VA I went back in the direction of my hotel to change quickly before heading out for a dinner meeting with the founder & Editor-in-Chief of Reservations, the Ultimate African American Travel Guide. I’m pleased to have had the opportunity to meet face to face while in the area. Talk coincidence! I won’t spill too many frijoles here – you’ll need to watch out for that elsewhere, but do look out for the magazine or subscribe online today! Note to my gorgeous people of color: This is a good thing!
My laundry was waiting for me when I returned from my pretending to have a social life. The bag glowed full of dirty pieces of cotton and silk jammies waiting to be bathed in 25 minute spin cycle – permanent press. I can’t tell you how much I detest doing laundry. The whole process bores me with the exception of ironing. I heart ironing clothing. That’s one of my finer domestic traits. Note to the fellas: That really reads as she makes a bangin’ salmon dinner, showers me with kisses and puts one hell of a crease in my jeans! Yeah…. I know.

In between capturing me in my Stepford wife moment, Mariella nabbed this one of me acting plain screwy. Don’t ask what I was doing. It feels good to be silly sometimes. (Snorts laughter)Photo: Mariella

The most important thing that transpired over the weekend:

I copped four tix for the Bjork show on May 19. (Quar, Ian, Hugo and Me) The new album, Volta, hits stores May 7 and well and I have the strange feeling it’s going to be…
More fiyah!
P.S. We couldn’t find a Persian New Years party to crash, but we did feast upon some very delicious Kabob at Moby Dick in Georgetown.
